PRODIGAL SON SoftBank is expected to put the bulk of its shares in US mobile network T-Mobile up for sale this week, in a mammoth sell-down that could raise more than US$20bn for the beleaguered Japanese technology group. It is expected to sell about two-thirds of its 25% stake, which it assumed after its subsidiary Sprint merged with T-Mobile's US business earlier this year. The divestment is part of a US$41bn fire sale of assets, as SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son rushes to raise cash to strengthen the company's stock price following a string of disastrous investments - including a massive bet on We Work. The deal will be the third multi-billion dollar sell-down to hit markets in recent weeks, helping US equity bankers to their best quarter on record.
