Capital markets are a crucial financing lifeblood for large and mid-sized UK companies and need to be better understood to help firms raise money and restructure to recover from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, a report said last week.The report by think-tank New Financial aims to highlight the importance of capital markets to a wider audience than people in the City of London or Canary Wharf, because markets will be needed to spur recovery by oiling the wheels of the wider economy. It said there is too much focus on bank lending.The report estimated that more than 90% of large UK companies, which together employ 6 million people, use capital markets to raise funds, invest in their business or manage risk; and 14,000 smaller firms also use capital markets, and they collectively employ 2 million people.
