The dire straits in which UBS finds itself were underlined last week when the firm dumped the linchpin of its Latin American strategy. The sale of its Brazilian investment bank, Pactual, to Andre Esteves for US$2.5bn surprised some but was clearly considered necessary to raise capital and came as UBS hunkers down to concentrate on its core areas of expertise.
