As the markets closed for the weekend last week, the fate of Morgan Stanley was hanging by a thread. Despite a flood of speculation surrounding the possible renegotiation of a proposed capital injection by Mitsubishi UFJ into Morgan Stanley, at the end of last week it seemed unlikely that the US authorities would repeat their Lehman mistake by refusing to rescue the firm should such a move prove necessary.
