Fixed-income investors are reviewing their exposure to the Chinese life insurance sector after some offshore bonds dropped sharply in recent weeks. Chinese insurers, especially life insurers, have invested heavily in "alternative investments" or "non-standard investments", which can include debt or equity investment schemes, trust plans, and wealth management products from banks or asset management companies. These offer higher returns than traditional fixed income products, but also greater risk.
