European Commission Plans to Develop 'Green GDP' to Measure Countries' Progress

The European Commission Nov. 19 called for the development of new indicators to track the progress of countries using measures other than purely economic factors, including environmental well-being. European Union Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas, speaking to journalists, said development of a measurement of "green or sustainable gross domestic product" (GDP) would help "steer our economy on a truly sustainable path."
