EU Parliament Amends Several Directives On Environment to Integrate New Powers

Strasbourg, France—The European Parliament was due July 11 to approve changes to several environmental directives in order to integrate new Parliamentary oversight powers. A 2006 agreement between Parliament, the executive European Commission, and the 27 EU member states aimed to streamline lawmaking by authorizing the Commission to adopt implementing rules or technical updates through exercise of delegated powers.rnPreviously, many changes in environmental law had to be adopted through cumbersome procedures for amending the original legislation, while in other areas, the Commission was entitled to act on the advice of expert panels without consulting Parliament.
