Seattle—The U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington Jan. 23 fined Irika Maritime S.A. $500,000 for failing to maintain an accurate oil record book and illegally dumping oily sludge into the ocean, according to the U.S. attorney for the Western District of Washington (U.S. v. Irika Maritime S.A., W. Wash., No. CR06-5661RBL, 1/23/07).rnThe ship, a Panamanian-flagged bulk carrier, also will be subject to four years of probation and will pay a special assessment of $250,000 to fund habitat conservation projects under a plea agreement approved by the court, the U.S. attorney said in a statement.
