EU, Russia Agree to Establish Mechanisms For Cooperation on Environmental Policies

Brussels—The European Union and Russia will cooperate on environmental protection through seven working groups under an agreement signed Oct. 10 in Helsinki, Finland. The agreement was signed at the first meeting of the EU-Russia Permanent Partnership Council on environmental protection, convened under the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement between the European Union and Russia, which runs until the end of 2007. Previous meetings held under the cooperation agreement dealt with economic, security, research, and education issues. However, the new agreement would put "structures in place to enable intensive and systematic collaboration" on issues such as climate change, Jan-Erik Enestam, Finland's environment minister, said in a statement.
