Buenos aires—Argentina will spend 5.67 billion pesos ($1.83 billion) over 15 years to clean up Buenos Aires' badly polluted Matanza-Riachuelo River, to. relocate industrial sites, to remove illegal dumps, and to improve drinking water and wastewater infrastructure, Environment Secretary Romina Picolotti said Sept. 5.rnPicolotti announced the plans during the first of two hearings held by the Supreme Court, which had ordered the federal government and the governments of Buenos Aires City and Buenos Aires province to come up with a joint cleanup plan for the 2,240-square-kilometer basin (29 INER 645, 09/6/06).rnAccording to Picolotti, 7 million of Argentina's 40 million people live in the Matanza-Riachuelo basin. The river divides Argentina's capital from the Province of Buenos Aires, which shares the name but is a separate jurisdiction.
