The European Parliament's Environment Committee approved compromise amendments Nov. 5 to proposed legislation that, among other things, would effectively ban certain toxic chemicals from use in pesticides in the European Union, except in cases where they can be proven crucial to protecting plant health. Supporters of the legislation in Parliament hope to reach an agreement with the European Commission and the European Council of Ministers on a final version in January or February. As part of a proposed regulation on production, licensing, and use of pesticides in the European Union (preliminary reference number COD/2006/0136), the ban would specifically target substances that are endocrine-disrupting, genotoxic, carcinogenic, or toxic to reproduction, committee spokesman Jack Blackwell told BNA.
