The Ontario government will join the Western Climate Initiative to join in its development of a cap-and-trade system for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, Environment Minister John Gerretsen said July 18. "We are committed to working with leading provincial and state jurisdictions in jointly tackling climate change through a cap-and-trade system," Gerretsen said in a statement. "Our government believes that cap-and-trade is a fair and effective approach that is both economically and environmentally sound." Membership in the initiative supports Ontario's commitment to phasing out coal-fired electricity generation and setting of some of the toughest greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets in North America, he said.
