Poland Anticipates Missing EU Deadline To Cut Landfill Waste; Seeks to Avoid Fines

The Polish government is seeking to avoid fines for failing to drastically reduce household waste deposited in landfills, as required by the 2004 Accession Treaty to the European Union, a government official said Aug. 27,rnPoland and nine other countries that joined the European Union in 2004 have until the end of 2010 to reduce the amount deposited by 75 percent.
