Extension of an environmental mitigation program is being touted as the key component to end the long financial crisis involving Doe Run Peru, a subsidiary of the New York-based Renco Group. Doe Run, which operates a multi-metal smelter in the highland town of La Oroya, 90 miles east of Lima, announced Aug. 4 that it had requested a government-run financial restructuring to keep creditors from seizing its assets. The National Institute for the Defense of Competition and Protection of Intellectual Property (Inde-copi) would manage the restructuring under the plan.
