IMO Adopts Interim, Voluntary Guidelines To Cut Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Ships

The International Maritime Organization's Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) has approved a package of voluntary, interim measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping, focusing on ship design and energy and operational efficiencies.rnThe MEPC approved the interim guidelines at its 59th session, held in London July 13-17. One set of guidelines outlines methods of calculation and voluntary verification of the Energy Efficiency Design Index for new ships, which is designed to spur development of energy-efficient ship design methods. The committee also approved guidance on the development of a Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan for new and existing ships, incorporating best practices for fuel-efficient ship operations including improved voyage planning, optimization of speed and power, and improved fleet management and cargo handling.
