France Seeks Companies To Construct Biomass-fueled Electrical Power Plants

French Minister of Ecology, Energy, Sustainable Development, and Territorial Planning Jean-Louis Borloo has launched a new call for projects to construct electrical power plants fueled by biomass. The goal is to build, by 2012, biomass-fueled power plants able to churn out a total of 250 megawatts, or the equivalent of about a quarter of the capacity of a nuclear reactor, Borloo said Jan. 7. The ministry said the bid selection process will pay particular attention to the quality of biomass supply. "Plants must have a high energy yield and conform with applicable atmospheric pollution standards," the ministry said. Most of the program's capacity, 150 watts, will be allocated to projects in geographic regions that the government considers "priority," for example, those that have been hard hit by government plans to close military bases, areas that have power shortages, and other regions that could benefit by an outlet for substances such as green algae and effluents from livestock, the ministry said.
