Peru Turns to U.N. Agency to Review Copper Mining Project, Allay Locals' Fears

Peru's Energy and Mines Ministry (MEM) has asked the United Nations to help evaluate the environmental impact study for a mining project in the country's southern Arequipa department that has long been delayed by local protests.rnThe ministry's General Bureau for Mining Environmental Issues published a standard Dec. 1 (Bureau Resolution 398-2010-MEM/AAM) bringing in the U.N. Office of Project Services (UNOPS) to evaluate the environmental impact study submitted for the Tia Maria copper mine planned by Southern Copper Corp. (SCC).
