The International Maritime Organization (IMO) said Oct. 6 it had acted to strengthen two sets of regulations designed to prevent sea pollution from packaged cargo and garbage.rnMaking the announcement several days after a week-long meeting of its Marine Environment Protection Committee, IMO said six ballast water management systems had also received final approval. These systems are aimed at minimizing damage caused by discharge from ballast water, which can contain animals and plants that can damage local ecosystems.
