Brazilian Company Makes Polyethylene From Sugar Cane Ethanol, Cites Carbon Capture

Braskem, Brazil's largest petrochemical producer, Sept. 24 officially opened a plant to make polyethylene, a packaging plastic, from sugar cane-based ethanol.rnThe company said the plant is the first of its kind in the world.rnBraskem calls its new thermoplastic "green polyethylene," as opposed to traditional polyethylene made from oil-based naphtha, because sugar cane is renewable and captures carbon dioxide as it grows (31 INER 1037, 11/12/08).
