U.S. Official Says More Climate Talks Needed; Cancun Picked to Host U.N. Talks This Fall

International climate negotiators probably will need to hold additional meetings in 2010 if year-end talks in Mexico with representatives from more than 190 nations are to produce a new binding international agreement to curb greenhouse gas emissions, a U.S. negotiator said Jan. 25.rnBut progress on many outstanding issues, ranging from emissions-reduction actions to financing to help vulnerable countries adapt to the effects of climate change, may be possible through other meetings scheduled throughout the year that are not part of the formal U.N. negotiating process, according to Jonathan Persh-ing, U.S. deputy special envoy for climate change.
