EU Countries Agree in Principle to Restrict Phosphates in Laundry, Dishwasher Detergent

EU member states represented by the EU Council signaled Nov. 15 that they could accept a draft legislative text prepared by the European Parliament that would place a limit on phosphates in household laundry and dishwasher detergents. Under the proposals, laundry detergents should contain no more than 0.5 grams of phosphate per standard wash and dishwasher detergents should contain no more than 0.5 percent by weight. The restrictions would be phased in from 2013 to 2015.
