Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia Launch Joint Effort to Protect Shared River, Forest Area

BUENOS AIRES-Argentina, Paraguay, and Bolivia have launched two separate joint drives to protect the shared Pilcomayo River basin and the Gran Chaco plains from pollution and desertification, Para guay's Environment Secretariat said Aug. 18. At a meeting in Paraguay the week of Aug. 15, offi cials from the three neighboring countries launched a program aimed at curbing mining pollution and erosion on the Pilcomayo basin. The plan will be funded in part by a $885,000 grant from the Global Environment Facil ity with additional support from the United Nations En vironment Program and the Organization of American States.
