Israel Increases Amounts of Solar, Biomass, Wind Generation Eligible for Feed-in Tariffs

After six months of inter-ministerial squabbling, Israel's Cabinet July 17 approved significant increases in the amount of solar power generation for which above-market rates will be paid, as well as generous production levels for biomass and wind energy facilities. The so-called quotas set the amount of power generated from each type of renewable source that can qualify for government-subsidized feed-in tariffs when sold to the Israel Electric Co. The allocations, valued at more than $5 billion in government subsidies, are part of a plan to supply Israel with 1,550 megawatts of electricity from renewable sources by the end of 2014 and 2,760 MW by the end of 2020. The higher tariffs are designed to encourage investment.
