摘要

RIO DE JANEIRO-Brazil has joined Yemen, Algeria, and Colombia to become one of the first four nations to sign the Nagoya Protocol, a framework to share profits generated from the commercial use of genetic resources found in nature as well as a strategic plan to prevent global biodiversity loss, according to the United Nations. The four countries signed the protocol Feb. 2, the opening day for signatures to the document, the United Nations said in a news release. The protocol, adopted in October 2010 at the 10th Conference of the Parties (COP-10) to the Convention on Biological Diversity, held in Nagoya, Japan, must be ratified by 50 of the 193 parties to the convention to take effect. The document is open for signing until Feb. 1, 2012.
