Ten Years of EU Biotech Research Shows No Higher Risks, Commission Report Says

European Union-financed biotechnology research over the past decade has concluded there is no scientific evidence associating genetically modified crops with higher risks for the environment or for food and animal feed safety compared with conventional plants and organisms, according to a European Commission report published Dec. 9. Based on 130 research projects and conducted by academic institutions throughout the European Union and by the bloc's own scientific research center, the report, A Decade of EU-Funded GMO Research, summarizes the results of research on biotech crops dating to 2001 and is part of a 25-year project to analyze the impact of biotechnology. The European Commission said the conclusions also indicate genetically modified crops hold vast potential for reducing the environmental impact of agriculture and boosting crop yields.
