Ministry Says Japan's Greenhouse Gas Output Fell in 2009 to 4 Percent Below 1990 Levels

Weak energy demand following the 2008 global financial crisis and increased production from nuclear power plants helped to reduce Japan's greenhouse gas emissions in fiscal 2009 to 1.209 billion tons, or 4.1 percent below 1990 levels, the Ministry of the Economy, Trade, and Industry said Dec. 27. Compared with fiscal 2008, emissions levels during the 2009 fiscal year (April 2009 through March 2010) fell by 5.7 percent, the ministry said.
