European Commission Proposes Changes To Assessments of Chemical Risks

The European Commission is calling for significant changes to chemical risk assessments to make the analyses more realistic and to emphasize the essential role of exposure.In a paper released for comment through Nov. 30, the European Commission called for: new models for ecological and human health risk assessments that more realistically account for the complex interactions in ecosystems; models that provide insight into the biological changes that occur when organisms or people encounter one or more chemicals or other stressors; and a "paradigm shift" from assessments based on the hazardous properties of chemicals to analyses driven by exposure.
