U.N. Report Warns of Growing Environmental, Health Risks From Chemical Production, Use

The burgeoning international chemical industry is posing a growing threat to the world's environment and public health, a U.N. agency warned in a report issued Sept. 5. In its first Global Chemicals Outlook, the U.N. Environment Program (UNEP) said the current management of risks posed by the chemical sector is "unsustainable" and coordinated action by governments and industry "is urgently needed." "These risks are compounded by the steady shift in the production, use and disposal of chemical products from developed countries to emerging and developing economies, where safeguards and regulations are often weaker," UNEP warned.
