Japan Toughens Guidelines to Ensure Safe Transport, Disposal of Contaminated Soil

Amended Japanese guidelines direct waste management operators to submit information to municipal governments about the transport of contaminated soil and to ensure that treated soil has mercury and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) levels below set levels. The guidelines were released May 31 and took effect immediately, Hirokazu Tomogane, manager of the Ministry of the Environment's Soil Environment Division, said June 7.
