Brazil State Oil Company Petrobras Faces Fine for Ultra-Deepwater Spill

The enforcement arm (IBAMA) of the Environment Ministry plans to fine the state oil company Petrobras after concluding an investigation of a Jan. 31 ultra-deepwater oil spill off the coast of southeastern Brazil, an agency spokesman told Bloomberg BNA Feb. 1. Petrobras spilled 33,000 liters (8,718 gallons) of oil 300 kilometers (186.4 miles) offshore when a riser-a flexible column connecting a floating production platform to a wellhead-ruptured at depths of more than 7,000 feet. The well's safety system automatically shut it down after the rupture.
