Shipwreck Could Become Italy's Worst Ecological Disaster Since 1991, Officials Say

The cruise liner that capsized near the island of Giglio could become Italy's single largest environmental disaster in more than 20 years, according to Ministry of Environment officials. The Costa Concordia went down Jan. 13 with 2,400 metric tons of heavy fuel on board and another 200 tons of marine gas spread among 20 tanks, some of which remain out of the reach of salvage missions. A long hole was ripped in the side of the ship's hull when it ventured too close to the island's rocky shore. More than 30 people are dead or missing.
