Climate Change Adaptation, Land Use Remain Major Focuses for Government

TAIPEI, Taiwan-The Philippines in 2013 will continue to tackle challenges related to climate change and develop policies for land use, reforestation, waste management, and wastewater treatment. Work will begin on a People's Survival Fund (PSF), established by a law signed by Philippine President Be-nigno Aquino in August 2012, that aims to help local governments make communities more resilient to climate-induced disasters. According to Mary Ann Lucille L. Sering, vice chairwoman of the country's Climate Change Commission, the PSF board will have its first meeting in the first quarter of 2013 to decide on the mechanics of the fund. It is to be funded through the General Appropriations Act, with the amount initially set at 1 billion pesos ($23.4 million) annually.
