European Parliament Approves Regulation On Use of Imported Genetic Resources

The European Parliament Sept. 12 approved with amendments a proposed regulation on the use of imported plant and animal life in research programs or in the development of cosmetics, pharmaceu-ticals and other products. The regulation, proposed by the European Commission in October 2012, would implement in the European Union the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and Benefit-sharing, which is intended to preserve potentially commercially valuable biodiversity, and to ensure fair treatment of indigenous communities from whose lands the genetic resources are taken (35 INER 946, 10/10/12).
