After four years of experimenting with a carbon footprint of products (CFP) program, Japan's government is proposing to introduce a related carbon offset verification regime to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from industrial and consumer activities. At a study group meeting organized by the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry Sept. 3, participants affirmed that the CFP experimental program that began in fiscal 2009 ended in June without suffering any serious faults. The program labels products according to how much greenhouse gases are emitted during their entire life cycle, from raw material acquisition to disposal.
