EU Food Safety Authority Issues Guidance On Assessing Risks of Pesticides for Bees

Assessments of the risks that pesticides pose to bees should be made more comprehensive and should take into account chronic or repeat exposure to plant protection substances, according to guidance published by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in a follow-up to EU restrictions on certain pesticides because of concerns about their impact on bee health. The guidance, which builds on a risk assessment scheme last updated in September 2010, is intended to provide "up-to-date advice" to companies and authorities involved in the authorization of pesticides, EFSA said. The guidance was finalized by EFSA June 27 and published July 4.
