The proposed Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership between the United States and the European Union risks triggering a "race to the bottom" in which both sides adopt their partner's weakest regulations, representatives of environmental, labor, and consumer rights groups warned in a conference call July 8. Among the regulations at risk, the United States may be forced to give up its ability to regulate hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, and its "Buy American" provisions, the speakers cautioned, while the European Union may weaken its regulations regarding genetically modified foods and toxic chemicals.
