Amid growing criticism that the government's ambitious energy transition is becoming too costly and difficult, Chancellor Angela Merkel and her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) moved June 23 to reassure voters that Germany is on the right track to an affordable and renewable future.rnMerkel's CDU and its sister Christian Social Union (CSU) announced their party platform, releasing a 125-page manifesto that detailed their plans for their potential next term in office, with federal elections looming Sept. 22.rnUnder the energy transition, approved in 2011 following the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident in Japan, Germany's 17 nuclear plants are to be phased out by 2022 and renewables are to account for 80 percent of the energy mix by 2050.
