European Commission Calls For Comments on EU Waste Targets

The European Commission June 4 opened a public consultation on the European Union's waste targets, in preparation for a review of the bloc's policy on waste that is due to be published in 2014. The consultation calls for comments on a range of targets set out in the EU Waste Framework Directive (2008/98/EC), the Landfill Directive (99/31/EC), and the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (94/62/EC). The Waste Framework Directive requires European Union countries by 2020 to reuse or recycle 50 percent of waste glass, paper, plastic, and metal, and to reuse, recycle, or recover at least 70 percent of construction and demolition waste. The Waste Framework Directive requires these targets to be reviewed by the end of 2014.
