European Commission Bans Three Pesticides For Two Years to Protect Bee Population

The European Commission imposed May 24 a temporary ban on three pesticides used on plants and cereals as a precautionary measure designed to halt the decline in the European Union's bee population. Although a majority of the 27 EU member states failed earlier in 2013 to support the ban on the three pesticides-clothianidin, imidacloprid, and thiamethoxam-the European Commission used its powers as allowed by the EU treaty to impose a two-year ban that will begin on Dec. 1, 2013 (36 INER 578, 5/8/13).
