Brazil Considers Allowing Sugar Cane Cultivation, Ethanol Production in Amazon

Brazil's Congress is considering a bill that would authorize sugar cane cultivation and ethanol production in areas of the Amazon where trees already have been legally cut. The bill (PL No. 626/2011) passed the Senate Environment Committee May 14. If approved by the full Senate, it will be sent to the Chamber of Deputies for committee consideration and then likely a vote by the full house.
