Businesses that import wood into the United Kingdom will need to ensure it does not come from illegally harvested timber or risk jail sentences and unlimited fines under rules that go into effect March 3, according to the Department for the Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (Defra). The new Timber and Timber Products (Placing on the Market) Regulations 2013 transpose the EU Timber Regulation (EU No. 995/2010) into U.K. law. The EU regulation, similar to the U.S. Lacey Act, was approved by the European Parliament in 2010 (33 INER 693, 7/21/10).
