Environmental Group Says Urban Air Quality Worsens in Italy Despite Economic Slowdown

Every major urban area in Italy exceeded the Ministry of Health's safe levels for air quality in 2012, according to a report released Jan. 17 by the environmental lobby group Legambiente. The conclusions are drawn from Legambiente's own monitoring systems, which track particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and ozone but are less comprehensive than those used by the Ministry of Environment's technical wing (ISPRA). ISPRA's full-year report on urban air quality in Italy is not due out for several months.
