German Cabinet Adopts Climate Protection Plan in Bid to Reach Emissions Targets

The German Cabinet adopted a climate protection action program Dec. 3 that outlines a variety of measures to help the country reach its 2020 greenhouse gas reduction targets-which it is falling short of-including plans to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the energy sector by 22 million tons. The Action Program Climate Protection 2020 (Ak-tionsprogramm Klimaschutz 2020) "ensures Germany will reduce its greenhouse gas emissions 40 percent by 2020 compared to 1990 levels," the Environment Ministry said in a statement. Without the program, Germany will miss its target by five to eight percentage points, the ministry added.
