摘要

The incoming president of the European Commission should not reappoint a chief scientific adviser because the position is not structured to ensure the commission receives objective, independent advice on the scientific issues it addresses, more than two dozen nongovernmental organizations wrote to Presidentelect Jean-Claude Juncker. "Scientific scrutiny in policy-making is essential. The question is how to ensure the best representation of wide-ranging scientific advice is available to you and your colleagues. The chief scientific advisor position does not and cannot [fulfill] this purpose," the coalition wrote in an Aug. 19 letter. Nine of the coalition's 27 signatory organizations wrote Juncker a similar letter in July.
