Dichloromethane Probable Carcinogen, Says International Agency for Research on Cancer

Dichloromethane, which is used to make plastics, synthetic fibers, photographic films and solvents, is a probable human carcinogen, according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). At least five chemical companies including Dow Chemical Co., Occidental Chemical Holding Corp. and Dimmid Inc. reported making in or reporting into the U.S. 261 million pounds of dichloromethane (CAS No. 75-09-2) in 2011, according to information from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Dichloromethane was one of five chemicals an expert panel classified when IARC convened the panel June 3-10. Trade associations with registrants who observed the June meeting included the European Chlorinated Solvent Association, the Halogenated Solvents Industry Alliance, the American Chemistry Council and the Plastics Europe Fluoropolymers Group.
