摘要

The Brazilian government, through its growth acceleration plan (PAC) of massive infrastructure investments, launched in 2007, has awarded 16.6 billion reais ($7.5 billion) for contracts to improve and expand water supply in urban areas, according to the Planning Ministry's 10th update report on PAC works. These contracts consist of federal partnerships with state and municipal governments and private-sector companies to build water supply pipelines, treatment plants, dams, reservoirs and pumping stations, mostly in cities of 50,000 people or more. Other PAC projects, with separate budgets and contracts, include those to build railways, ports and paved roads and to lay oil pipelines. Between 2007 and 2009, 9.4 billion reais ($4.24 billion) worth of contracts were awarded for all 2,896 water supply projects selected by the government and will benefit 7.6 million families in 1,495 municipalities in all 26 Brazilian states.
