EU Members Reach Deal to Allow GM Ban In Crop Cultivation for Nonscientific Reasons

European Union member states are set to approve controversial legislation that will establish in EU law the right to ban the cultivation of genetically modified crops for reasons other than sound science. Although the EU and the U.S. are negotiating a free trade agreement to eliminate rules related to food safety and farming that aren't based on "sound science," the European Council of Environmental Ministers is expected to approve legislation in June that will give EU member states the right to ban GM crop cultivation for economic, social and ethical reasons.
