Canadian Agencies Propose Toxic Designation For 44 Petroleum, Refinery Gas Substances

The Canadian government has proposed to designate 44 petroleum and refinery gas substances as toxic based on their carcinogenicity and plans to develop regulations or other measures to limit their releases to the environment. Environment Canada and Health Canada proposed, in a draft order published in the Feb. 15 issue of the Canada Gazette, Part Ⅰ, the designation of 40 site-restricted petroleum and refinery gas (PRG) substances as toxic under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA). The agencies published the final screening assessments for the substances in June 2013 (36 INER 737. 6/5/13).
