Spain Adopts Waste Prevention Program, Relying on Voluntary Business Compliance

In a move to reduce waste 10 percent below 2010 levels by 2020 in tandem with European Union goals, Spain has adopted a 2014-2020 State Waste Prevention Program that relies heavily on voluntary corporate compliance. The plan was published Jan. 23 in the Boletin Oficial del Estado, Spain's national register. The government approved it Dec. 20. The plan details four "strategic lines of action" aimed partly at the manufacturing, distribution and service sectors. These include measures to reduce waste, reuse products and lengthen their useful life, reduce harmful substances in materials and products, and reduce the adverse human and environmental impacts of waste.
