Enbridge, TransCanada Team Up to Assess External Pipeline Leak Detection Technology

Enbridge Inc. and TransCanada Corp. will team up to assess new external leak-detection technologies for liquid pipelines, according to a joint statement from the companies. The pipeline operators announced Dec. 18 that they have signed a joint industry partnership agreement to fund research into which available technology is optimal for external detection of leaks. The companies plan to perform a series of tests in 2014 on the following external leak sensor technologies: distributed temperature sensing systems, fiber-optic distributed acoustic sensing systems, hydrocarbon-sensing cables and vapor-sensing tubes.
